SocialGlyphsSnapchat Streak Rules: What Counts, When It Ends and How to Save One
How Snapstreaks actually work: what counts as a Snap, the 24-hour rule, when the fire and hourglass appear, and how to restore a streak you just lost.
Snapstreaks look simple — a 🔥 and a number — but a few rules trip people up every day. Here’s exactly what keeps a streak alive.
The rules
- Both of you send a Snap to each other.
- Every 24 hours. Miss a window and the streak ends.
- Snaps only. Photos or videos taken with the Snapchat camera. Text Chats don’t count.
- Directly to the person. Not to your Story, and group Snaps aren’t reliable.
What the streak symbols mean
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 🔥 + number | Your streak is active; the number is days in a row |
| 💯 | You’ve hit 100 days |
| ⏳ | The streak ends soon — what the hourglass means |
What counts and what doesn’t
| Counts ✅ | Doesn’t count ❌ |
|---|---|
| Photo Snap sent to the friend | Text Chat |
| Video Snap sent to the friend | Posting to your Story |
| Snaps sent only to a group | |
| Sending a Snap without them sending one back |
How to never lose a streak
- Snap at the same time each day, like when you wake up.
- Watch for the hourglass — when you see it, snap right away.
- Don’t rely on “they’ll snap me” — both sides need to send.
How to restore a Snapstreak
If a streak just ended, open the chat and look for a Restore option. Snapchat offers restores for recently lost streaks, and Snapchat+ includes them. If there’s no button, go to Snapchat Support and submit a streak restore request soon — the longer you wait, the less likely it is to work.

Frequently asked questions
How many days until a Snapstreak starts?
The fire emoji appears after you've snapped each other for a few days in a row (commonly three).
Do group Snaps count for streaks?
Snaps sent to a group chat don't reliably count toward individual streaks. Send Snaps directly to the person.
Does sending a Snap to my story count?
No. Story posts don't count. The Snap has to be sent directly to that friend.
How do I restore a lost Snapstreak?
Look for the Restore option in the chat soon after it ends — Snapchat+ includes restores. Otherwise, request help through Snapchat Support.
